Printed Pencil Skirts: Fall 2012′s New Spin on a Classic

We have the pencil skirt for many seasons now.  This fall, this popular basic is getting a refreshed makeover– printed pencil skirts.  I know, so terribly creative.  Yet, because there are few people who don’t look good in a pencil skirt, adding a printed twist could be a way to keep this trend alive in your wardrobe without it feeling stale.  And, for the print phobic, a print worn away from the face, may be a way to embrace prints without too much distraction.  Few people like prints splashed across the bottom half of their body, yet in such a flattering style, if you’re looking for printed bottoms, the pencil skirt may just be the way to go.

Take a look at some outfits I put together using the printed pencil skirt and let me know if this is a trend you will be purchasing or passing up.

The nice thing about wearing prints is that prints easily tell you what colors to add to a look.  Here, I pulled out the yellow, grey and teal to add as accents.  The whole look harmonizes, yet has some punch at the same time.

While I can go on and on about the figure flattering qualities of a pencil skirt, I do want to point out that you do need to proceed with caution when it comes to knit pencil skirts.  Even if you have the hint of a bulbous thigh, it’s probably best that you leave the look at the store or find some industrial strength Spanx.  Trust me on this one…trust me.

With animal print being so hot, why not try it in a pencil skirt.  Here, with the leopard  instead of going all black, I brought in the mid-brown shade of the print and then accented the outfit with black.

For a suited look that doesn’t look so stuffy, pair a printed pencil with a blazer.  You get a corporate look that stands out, yet fits in at the same time.
