Should Kids Wear Fishnet Stockings?

Call me old fashioned, but when I was a kid fishnets were worn by cocktail waitresses, with Halloween costumes when women chose to dress up like a sexy <fill in the blank>, or hookers.  Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pair of fishnet stockings now. I appreciate the trend has evolved beyond sexy witch costumes and street walkers. I always choose fishnets over traditional pantyhose.

Regardless of how trend has evolved, that it has become more commonplace to wear a pair of fishnets just ’cause, I’m still a bit stymied by fishnets for kids, which can be found at WeLoveColors.com.  A seasoned style expert I am, but I have never professed to be an aficionado of children’s styles, so maybe I am way out in Puritan-land here.  Yet, when I think of fishnets, I think sexy, which is why I love wearing them as an adult.  No matter what I am wearing, add a pair of fishnets and I suddenly feel seductive, feminine and notice that a bit of a swagger is developed once I strut around in them.  Therefore, there is something, in my opinion, just a bit counterintuitive about slapping a pair of fishnets on a child.  However, I also think about a punk side of fishnets, for kids, in particular, a Punky Brewster vibe, if you will.  So, maybe I’m missing the point, entirely.

I’ll throw it out to you: Fishnets on children, yay or nay?

Oh, and I must add this photo for humor…A definite nay!

This is a toughie. On the surface, my immediate I-have-a-4.5yo-daughter reaction is “no way, never ever.” But then, I just looked at her dance pics, and they could easily, in a tap number, wear fishnets (they’re not). I doubt anyone would bat an eyelash. I’m also a sort-of fan of the punk vibe, though as cool as it seems on kids (and my bean has a Metallica t, for heaven’s sake), I’m still not convinced it’s ok. Let them keep their innocence as long as possible. The problem is that true kids clothes (vice smaller versions of grownup clothes) are hard to find, and when you do, they’re incredibly expensive (jacadi, janie and jack, even plain ol gap).

So in short, I think the anwer is “Nay.” But I took a lot longer to say that than I thought.
